چکیده

In three structural priming experiments, we investigated temporarily ambiguous sentences such as While the man was visiting the children who were surprisingly pleasant and funny played outside. Participants produced more transitive sentences following such temporarily ambiguous sentences than following unambiguous sentences that were disambiguated by the use of a comma, indicating that the initial transitive analysis remained activated even though it was inconsistent with the disambiguation. We argue that this provides evidence against full deactivation of the inappropriate analysis. Our results support models that claim that the initial, inappropriate analysis remains activated, either because it leaves a memory trace (Kaschak & Glenberg, 2004) or because readers do not fully reanalyze the sentence when they encounter the disambiguation (Christianson, Hollingworth, Halliwell, & Ferreira, 2001).

An Investigation into the Effective Factors in Comprehending English Garden-Path Sentences by EFL Learners

The present study aimed at highlighting the possible effects of age, proficiency level, and the structural composition of Garden-Path (GP) sentences on EFL learners' comprehension. 80 Iranian EFL learners were recruited from the initial pool of 114 participants based on the results of an English proficiency test; 40 advanced, and 40 intermediate learners were selected. Moreover, two age...

Neural correlates of early-closure garden-path processing: Effects of prosody and plausibility.

Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) was used to investigate neural correlates of early-closure garden-path sentence processing and use of extrasyntactic information to resolve temporary syntactic ambiguities. Sixteen participants performed an auditory picture verification task on sentences presented with natural versus flat intonation. Stimuli included sentences in which the garden-pat...

Background: Recent studies have indicated that working memory is not a unitary resource and that different types of working memory are used for different types of linguistic processing: syntactic, semantic, and phonological. Phonological working memory was found to support the comprehension of sentences that require re-access to the word-form of a word that appeared earlier in the sentence. Aim...

Semantic Priming Effect on Relative Clause Attachment Ambiguity Resolution in L2

This study examined whether processing ambiguous sentences containing relative clauses (RCs) following a complex determiner phrase (DP) by Persian-speaking learners of L2 English with different proficiency and working memory capacities (WMCs) is affected by semantic priming. The semantic relationship studied was one between the subject/verb of the main clause and one of the DPs in the complex D...

Is human sentence parsing serial or parallel? Evidence from event-related brain potentials.

In this ERP study we investigate the processes that occur in syntactically ambiguous German sentences at the point of disambiguation. Whereas most psycholinguistic theories agree on the view that processing difficulties arise when parsing preferences are disconfirmed (so-called garden-path effects), important differences exist with respect to theoretical assumptions about the parser's recovery ...
